Hardware in use
The VR Lab uses hardware from Imsys. For VR you generally need a display medium, a tracking system, a PC-cluster and an input device. Depending on the purpose, the VR Lab uses different tools.
VR2GO (small mobile system)
The small and mobile system is perfect for quick demonstrations where quick set up and dismanteling within 15 minutes can be guaranteed. It consists of two tracking cameras, a portable PC-cluster and a display medium with corresponding 3D glasses. The display medium can be either a 3D projector with projection screen (e.g. white canvas, white wall etc. of any size) or a 3D monitor (46’’). As input/interaction device, there is a flystick, one pair of tracking glasses and several targets, which can be complemented by tools, e.g. wrenches.
The VR2GO system can be moved freely. The system can be set up and dismantled at any location. However, when using the 3D projector it is important for the environment to be not too bright and that there are no directly interfering factors, e.g. low-energy lamps, which influence stereoscopic representation.
CarryON (medium-sized, mobile system)
CarryON is the standard system installed in the VR Lab, but can be moved any time. It can be operated within two hours after transport. Currently, it consists of four tracking cameras, two PD-clusters, one projection canvas and a 3D projector with corresponding 3D glasses. During the winter semester 2014/15 floor projection was added to the projection screen and thus a second 3D projector can be used. Due to the two-sided projection, the immersive impression becomes even stronger. The wall screen and the floor screen measure 3x2 metre each. As input/interaction devices, the same devices can be used as for the VR2Go - flystick, tracking glasses, targets, etc.
The CarryON system, too, can be moved freely and used like the VR2GO system.
CAVE
The large system is permanently installed in the Lab of the University of Würzburg and not portable. It consists of six tracking cameras, one PC-cluster, three projection screens (two walls and one floor screen) and three 3D projectors with corresponding 3D glasses. The screens measure 3x3 metres each. As input/interaction devices, the input devices of the University of Würzburg can be used. Additionally, there is a full motion capture suit.
