What does the Master Business and Engineering offer?
In a world where innovation cycles are becoming shorter and uncertainty is on the rise, professionals are needed who can navigate a dynamic and complex environment with confidence. These challenges are described with the term VUCA: Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity, and Ambiguity. To succeed in this new reality, you need specific skills and a deep understanding of the interconnections.
The Master’s programme in Business and Engineering at the Technical University of Applied Sciences Würzburg-Schweinfurt (THWS) comprehensively prepares you for these demands. In addition to deepening your technical competencies, the program places special emphasis on developing your ability to understand problems holistically and solve them in interdisciplinary teams. These are crucial skills for succeeding in a VUCA-influenced environment.
With the Master of Engineering (M.Eng.) degree, a wide range of opportunities open up for you. You will be well-qualified to take on specialist and leadership positions in industrial companies or to work in higher public service. Furthermore, the master’s degree paves the way for you to pursue a PhD and further distinguish yourself in academia.
Contents and structure
The master’s programme is a modularised three-semester full-time programme based on a bachelor’s degree or a German Diplom degree in (industrial) engineering, natural/economic/business sciences, or logistics. The language of instruction is English.
Six module exams are to be completed, three in the first and three in the second semester. During the second and third semester (Master's thesis), students will work on a research project of their choice. The context for the research projects is determined by the guiding topic, which is newly defined for each cohort of students Students will write their Master's thesis during the final semester. They will be granted five months and students will have to defend their theses in the Master’s colloquium.

For information about fees, please visit the pages of the Department of Student Affairs.
Applicants from abroad
For international students, the conditions vary widely from country to country. The most important stipulation for accreditation in Germany is that the level of education after completing the school-leaving qualification must be approximately comparable to the German general higher education qualification (Abitur). Please note that it might be necessary to complete further studies in your home country after obtaining your school-leaving qualification to be eligible to study in Germany.
On the website of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) you can check the admission requirements depending on your country of origin. Information is also available in the database of the Standing Conference of Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs of the Länder (Kultusministerkonferenz, KMK) available at www.anabin.kmk.org. Please note, however, that this database is currently only available in German. For some countries, Uni-assist.de offers information on the specific requirements for admission to higher education in Germany.Opens internal link in current window.
Language requirements
In addition to possessing a university entrance qualification you will have to prove certain language skills in order to be enrolled. If you intend to study in German, prove of German language proficiency of the level B2 is necessary. Which certificates/exams are recognised is listed in the overview "Language requirements" or can be found on the webpage of the Department of Student Affairs.
Research projects
The students will choose a practice-relevant research project in the context of the guiding topic. There will be a new topic for each cohort. They will work on the project during the second and third semester (Master's thesis). The projects are supervised by professors and companies ("Academic Club") and creates a network between students and the real-world professional field. Methodological training and regular feedback enable students to contribute to applied research.
Master’s Thesis
The master’s thesis is scheduled for the 3rd semester. It can either be written within the University or outside it, such as within a company.
For detailed information, please refer to §10 of the study and examination regulations (SPO) currently valid for your degree programme.
E-Learning
In the section “Wissenschaftliches Arbeiten/Scientific papers” within the E-Learning course "Studien- und Prüfungsangelegenheiten/study and examination matters", you will find more information about your final thesis, e.g. necessary documents or answers to frequently asked questions.
