Applying for Studying Abroad

The application process for a semester abroad consists of two parts. First, you must submit your application for a semester abroad to the faculty during the application period. The deadline is usually at the beginning of December and is communicated in good time via the Faculty's homepage and in E-Learning in the forum News Studieren im Ausland/News studying abroad in the course Studieren im Ausland FWI / Study Abroad FWI.

Please note that the application deadline at the Faculty of Business and Engineering is approximately four weeks before the university-wide deadline.

Academic part

The Faculty of Business and Engineering itself handles the academic part. All important documents, information and forms, such as the application form can be found in the E-Learning in the course Studieren im Ausland FWI / Study Abroad FWI.

Selection criteria:

Slots at partner universities are allocated according to the following selection criteria. These criteria are also used for selection for Erasmus+ funding:

1. academic performance (submission of current grade transcript).

2. personal motivation for studying abroad (letter of motivation)

3. other competences as well as involvement in higher education and society (involvement in we@fwi study group or similar).

After the closing date for the faculty-internal application, you will timely receive feedback on your application as well as information on the further steps.

Organisational part

After the successful application at the faculty, the academic part is finished and the organisational part via the International Office (HSIN) begins. After a successful application, you will receive all the necessary information from the faculty by e-mail.The International Office will then nominate you to the partner university once your details and documents are complete.

You can find more information on this in the e-learning course Studieren im Ausland FWI / Study Abroad FWI.

Funding through Erasmus+: You can also apply for Erasmus+ funding via the International Office. A differentiation is made as follows:

  • Student mobility with programme countries: Erasmus+ programme countries include the member states of the European Union as well as some other countries (e.g. Norway). Funding for studies in programme countries can be granted if
    • the application within the faculty was successful (for selection criteria and procedure see above)
    • the requirements of the respective programme are met, and
    • corresponding funds are available.
  • Student mobility with partner countries (non-EU): Erasmus+ funding is also available for studies at higher education institutions from certain partner countries. Funding for studies in partner countries can be granted if
    • the application within the faculty was successful (for selection criteria and procedure see above)
    • the requirements of the respective programme are met, and
    • corresponding funds are available.
    • An additional funding requirement for student mobility with partner countries (non-EU) is that you apply to the International Office for Erasmus+ non-EU funding. The application steps and selection criteria for the funding decision can be found here.
