Visiting Professor Dr. Safwan Altarazi from GJU in Amman at FHWS
Between the 8 and 19 May 2017, Professor Altarazi from Jordan was our guest at the Faculty of Faculty of Business and Engineering of FHWS. He taught the elective "Quality Control and Six Sigma" as a two-week intensive course. Currently, eight students of the GJU German Jordanian University are completing their compulsory "semester in Germany" at the Faculty of Business and Engineering. GJU has partnerships with 111 German higher education institutions. Even the Jordanian Royal Family is proud of the project which is one of the largest educational export projects of the Federal Republic of Germany.
The German Language Center of GJU is one of the largest schools for German language outside Germany, with about 70 teachers, mainly native speakers. Accordingly, the students of GJU are happy about fellow students from Germany, not only to train their language skills.
Prof. Altarazi encourages GJU’s desire of welcoming more German students for a stay abroad. Prof. Altarazi tells us about a peaceful Jordan with little crime, though surrounded by the hotspots of crisis-stricken regions. The quality of education in the country is generally very good, the density of engineers above average. The university is located in the capital Amman, home to four million people. Jordan has many historical sites, some as old as 5,000 to 6,000 years, like the deserted city of Petra, famous for its rock-cut architecture. The Dead Sea, the River Jordan, the ancient city of Jerash, which was already mentioned in the Bible, the bizarre landscapes of Wadi Rum, or the Red Sea are other exciting destinations in the region.
A few facts:
Climate: Temperatures in the dry desert state range between 5 to 12 degrees Celsius with some rain in winter and 20 to 33 degrees Celsius in summer.
Activities: The International Office organises numerous excursions for foreign students.
Students: At GJU, there are about 4,000 students; about 40% of all students are women. Most students are from Jordanor from the surrounding countries. They are welcoming and curious about their colleagues from Germany.
