Overview
Fabian Scheller is Professor for Energy Efficiency and Resource Efficiency at the Technical University of Applied Sciences Würzburg-Schweinfurt since October 2022. Additionally, he is the head of the Energy System Management and Technology Integration working group at the Center for Applied Energy Research e.V.. Before that, he worked as an Assistant Professor (tenure track) in the Energy Economics and Modelling section at DTU Management, Technical University of Denmark (DTU). From 2019 to 2021, he was a PostDoc in the same section, having been awarded the prestigious H.C. Ørsted/Marie Curie post-doctoral fellowship. He previously held a position at the Institute for Infrastructure and Resources Management (IIRM) at Leipzig University. In 2019, Fabian earned a Doctoral Degree in Engineering with distinction (Dr.-Ing, summa cum laude). This achievement followed his Master’s degree in Renewable and Sustainable Energy Technologies from Northumbria University, where he graduated with the program’s highest average grade. He also possesses Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Information Engineering and Management from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT).
The primary focus of his research revolves around the socio-techno-economic modelling of low-carbon transformation pathways across various levels and contexts. Leveraging his interdisciplinary background, Fabian investigates current and envisions future policy measures that nudge diverse societal groups towards pro-environmental behaviour, capitalizing on local system synergies. His research initiatives began with the development of the open-source optimisation model, IRPopt. This innovative model facilitates the economic evaluation of flexibility models like demand response and community storage from diverse actor viewpoints. Recognizing that conventional cost minimisation assumptions limit the potential decisions, Fabian co-developed the agent-based simulation model IRPact to encapsulate intricate behavioural interactions. To fulfill the empirical utility decision function, he delved deep into behavioural theories, employing qualitative focus group discussions, meta-studies, and survey statistics.
Fabian Scheller's research contributions have been published in over 30 peer-reviewed publications in esteemed scientific journals, including Energy Research and Social Science, Energy Economics, Applied Energy, and Complex Adaptive Systems Modeling. Collaborating with experts from varied fields such as psychology, engineering, and economics, he has co-authored papers with researchers and professionals from institutions like ETH Zürich, the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, and InfAI Leipzig. In practice-oriented projects, such as H2Flex, IRPsim, and SUSIC, he partners with industrial corporations and energy providers. His freelance consulting engagements have endowed him with a diverse industrial experience. Utilizing his models, he aids in driving sustainable transformation. He has also presented his research findings and project outcomes to the boards of municipal utilities. Fabian is a member of the Gesellschaft für Energiewissenschaft und Energiepolitik (GEE) and the International Association for Energy Economics (IAEE). He also holds an associate membership with the Deutsche Unternehmensinitiative Energieeffizienz (DENEFF).
